On Monday afternoon, at 24 Snowberry Way, two firefighters got injured after falling through the floor that was collapsing. The two were volunteer firefighters who were fighting fire in a house in Stittsville, at the Southwest of Ottawa.

The Ottawa Fire Services say that the two fell into the basement, through the main floor. It is believed that the electric panel in the basement caused the fire after an electrical surge. But investigations on the incidence continue.

The two were rushed to a hospital and were listed as in stable condition. One of the firefighters who fell through the collapsing floor had to be rescued from the building. He was in an induced coma, but by Tuesday the Fire Chief informed the public that he was expected to recover, fully.

Determining the Severity of an Injury

Are you involved in an accident? Did you suffer any injuries? The common injuries suffered in an accident include brain, neck injury or whiplash and even spinal cord injuries.

If you suffer a brain injury after an accident, how is the severity measured? The seriousness of a brain injury is determined by where in the brain you have an injury. The swelling that occurs and how much of your brain is injured, matters.

Medical experts will conduct tests such as:

  • Electroencephalograms or otherwise known as EEGs
  • Taking CT Scans to help them understand the extent of the injuries to the brain.

However, the tests are not enough to assist in determining how severe the injury is. In such instances, they will need to use additional techniques. Popular methods used are, GCS or the Glasgow Comma Scale, in conjunction with the length of time that the patient has Post Traumatic Amnesia.

PTA is where the patient has troubles thinking, concentrating, remembering, etc. What can you use to estimate how fast one recovers? The recovery time taken by each patient depends on:

  • Their age
  • General health
  • Whether they suffer other injuries
  • The type and seriousness of the injury that they suffer, etc.

The more serious the injuries, the longer it takes to recover. For a FREE consultation approach Kalsi & Associates, a team of personal Injury Lawyers to discuss your confidential matter.
