Employers usually pay for short term insurance policies and when they don’t, the employees have to rely on Employment Insurance provided by the government.

Long term disability is when an individual is considered completely unable to return to work. Depending on the policy you have purchased, the policy will cover your income, medical treatment and rehabilitation. Long term disability benefits can be received till 65 years of age and the amount of benefits is reduced if you get disability benefits from other sources like Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

Falls are one of the Top Reasons Canadians are Getting Injured

Huffington Post

Accidental falls have been stated to be the most common cause of injury in Canada by the Canadian Institute for Health Insurance. These often lead to a trip to the emergency department and occasionally the injuries are severe. In 2017, it was reported that 1800 people rushed to ED after sustaining a fall and out of these, 417 people needed to stay overnight at the hospital. Elderly people were the ones with severe injuries while children and young adults were also recorded.

Injuries caused by slip and fall increase during the winter season because of snow, ice, and other slippery conditions. Although the government of Canada tries to do its best to maintain non-slipper sidewalks and other surfaces but even a single patch can make an individual fall down and break a bone.

Most Common Injuries after Slip and Fall

The most common types of injuries sustained after a slip and fall accident in Canada are:

1. Head injury
2. Broken lower leg and ankle
3. Broken hip

Hip injuries happen very commonly when a person falls down while walking but this problem is very serious for seniors because, at their age, they lack the physical strength to completely heal and may end up with a lifelong problem. Complications related to hip injury can be fatal too.

Reduce the Risk of Falling

Falling happens by accident and there isn’t much you can do to protect yourself. Nonetheless, there are few precautions that will keep you safe in the winters:

1. Wear shoes with deep treads during winter to reduce your chances of slipping.
2. Be careful while going down the stairs and if it’s wet, hold on to the handrail.
3. Pay attention to the floor you are walking on and if it’s wet/icy be extra cautious.
4. Try to avoid walking on cracked sidewalks and poorly maintained walkways.

They can help you with most types of personal injuries including catastrophic accident litigation, slip and fall, motor vehicle accident and claims related to them. Driver To Torontonian Bystander: ‘Looks Like Another Dead Cyclist’

CBC Radio

After allegedly following a Toronto cyclist down a tight alleyway last week, an agitated driver blared his horn and declared, “Looks like another dead cyclist.”

Colin Powell claims the motorist was attempting to convince him from behind to steer his bicycle in another direction while approaching an alley close to Toronto’s Little Italy neighborhood. The driver’s constant screaming and honking eventually “rattled” Powell, who stopped his bike to collect himself after the alleged harasser yelled the aforementioned threat and began pulling into his garage.

“There’s no space to move. There’s definitely not space for a bike and a car to be next to each other,” Powell recalled to As It Happens CBC Radio host Carol Off.

The incident was immediately reported to Toronto police, who cited privacy concerns in declining to confirm whether an official report had been filed.

“This is a police matter and it’s not our job to tell the police how to do their jobs. But an act like that — a threat like that — needs to be followed up on,” said Toronto Coun. Mike Layton.

Toronto police last week arrested a 27-year-old Oshawa man now facing charges in a fatal hit-and-run accident.

Jesse Petroff ended the life of a 50-year-old woman, later identified by family as Isabel Soria, when his Dodge Ram pickup truck struck her around 3 p.m. on June 11 at the intersection of Dufferin Street and Briar Hill Avenue. Police said surveillance footage and still, photos confirmed the driver left his stopped vehicle and approached the victim but immediately got back into his vehicle and fled the scene. Clear photos of the vehicle released Thursday accompanying a plea for citizens to provide any relevant information about its whereabouts and driver led to an arrest later that day.

Petroff now faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.

On Monday afternoon, at 24 Snowberry Way, two firefighters got injured after falling through the floor that was collapsing. The two were volunteer firefighters who were fighting fire in a house in Stittsville, at the Southwest of Ottawa.

The Ottawa Fire Services say that the two fell into the basement, through the main floor. It is believed that the electric panel in the basement caused the fire after an electrical surge. But investigations on the incidence continue.

The two were rushed to a hospital and were listed as in stable condition. One of the firefighters who fell through the collapsing floor had to be rescued from the building. He was in an induced coma, but by Tuesday the Fire Chief informed the public that he was expected to recover, fully.

Kalsi & Associates Raises Concern over The New Insurance Plan in Ontario

THE STAR

A recent report on the state of Ontario’s Auto Insurance Systems shows that we have one of the least effective systems in play. While there’s a decrease in the number of accidents, the opposite is evident on the number of claims. They have gone up.

With the aim of reducing the insurance premiums, the government is working on introducing the “Fair Auto Insurance Plan.” It has been a topic of discussion since last year. This new plan aims at reducing fraud cases and costs in the Auto Insurance industry.

One of the areas of concern by many Personal Injury Lawyers and Kalsi & Associates included is the new plan will make it more difficult for one to qualify for a particular coverage, in case of an accident. Though the project will save the public regarding auto insurance premiums, it may be to the detriment of victims of accidents.

According to the plan, the treatment plans for common injuries that result from collisions will be standard. Also, medical assessment for those with severe injuries due to an accident will be by neutral and independent centers for examination. Now, you will not go to a family doctor or your specialist for assessment.

You will have to go to a designated assessment center. It may result in an assessment that is not comprehensive, thorough, or even well-reasoned. As we wait to see what measures the development plans for this new system will take; feel free to contact Kalsi & Associates at (844) 905-2993, for your Personal Injury cases, or apply online.
