ROAD SAFETY MEASURES IN GREATER TORONTO AREA

Source:

Toronto City News

Road safety has emerged as a major issue in the Greater Toronto Area. This is one of the side-effects of the growth that this part of Canada has been experiencing in recent times and is likely to do so in the future as well.

The decline in road safety has been seen in both the growing number of pedestrian fatalities as well as collisions of vehicles. The local government has decided to act on this problem by launching a ‘Vision Zero’ road safety plan for 2017-2021 which aims to make the roads of this teeming metropolis safer.

Fatalities thanks to traffic accidents have gone up in recent years. In 2016, 77 people died due to road accidents. 43 of them were pedestrians, the largest segment. Not surprisingly then, the main focus of the authorities has been on making the roads safer for pedestrians. The overall strategy would involve using technology, educating people about road safety and stronger enforcement of laws.

When it comes to pedestrian safety, the authorities will identify those roads and zones which have been most accident-prone and take effective steps like reducing the crossing distance, enforcing speed regulations, protecting turning points etc. to bring down the casualty rate.

While this program was launched last year, this year too, the mayor and local administrators have taken strong steps to end the menace of road accidents. In March, the then Mayor John Tory unveiled some of the steps taken in this direction.

The same month also saw the councilors of Toronto vote in favor of similar measures to reduce the number of traffic accidents. One proposal though has generated diverse opinions. This is about creating lanes exclusively for bikes. The councilors want lanes for bikes while the mayor wants these lanes on a parallel street.

Whatever be the outcome of this debate, it is very reassuring that the local officials are tackling this problem head-on.

BRAMPTON CAR ACCIDENT LAWYERS URGE CAUTION AFTER TORONTO DRIVER DROWNS CAR IN POND

Source: CTV
Brampton car accident lawyers across our area take numerous cases this time of year stemming from hazardous winter driving conditions. In this instance, cold and wet weather didn’t so much cause a woman’s car to careen into a pond Wednesday night as make the potential consequences so much more severe.

The yet-unidentified woman escaped a crash with only minor injuries after a wreck that saw her vehicle hop a curb near Kennedy Road and Progress Avenue in Scarborough overnight, drive underneath a fence, and roll downhill into a pond, according to police by way of CTV. When officers arrived on the scene around 2 a.m., the visibly shaken woman told them she accidentally pressed her vehicle’s gas pedal in a closeby mall parking lot to set off the wild ride.

Though the pond had been covered with ice, the woman escaped and swam to shore before yelling for help. Fortunately, a motorist passing by noticed her and dialed 911 to summon aid. The driver was understandably rattled, but was released from hospital with no significant harm. Police and tow operators, meanwhile, worked together to extract the drowned vehicle from its watery grave Thursday morning.

It’s a timely cautionary tale for all GTA motorists this frozen season. Should your vehicle ever end up plunging into icy water, your first moves should be to unlock your nearest door and roll down the windows before the car can sink very far. Next, get out immediately either by opening the door, if possible, or crawling through the window – it takes little more than a minute for an average-sized sedan to fill with water once it goes into the drink. From there, it’s imperative to get out of the water as quickly as you can before hypothermia has a chance to take hold.

The car’s descent is no time to sit in the driver’s seat and dial 911. Make it to shore first, then summon help.
